Autism = a high-metabolic-demand state.

Autism is an energy-sensitive state of being. At the lower frequencies, the limiting symptoms dominate, and at the higher frequencies, the gifts and talents bloom. All beings on the autism spectrum are “Energy Sensitive”, meaning, they are born with an expanded bandwidth of being able to sense / feel / experience / navigate / struggle with an intense range of frequencies from various dimensions.
Mitochondrial Bioenergetics studies suggest that many individuals on the spectrum exhibit a “unique metabolic signature,” that show a high-metabolic-demand state required for increased sensory processing.
That means the autistic person's brain and nervous system are using a lot more energy to manage what is happening around them and inside their body. They may not look distressed. But their nervous system can be working extremely hard while they are sitting quietly, talking, participating, or “appearing” to cope.
An autistic person in a high-metabolic-demand state may:
become very quiet or withdrawn
have difficulty finding words or responding to questions
appear to be “switching off”
become slower at processing information
need much longer to answer or make decisions
become unusually rigid or repetitive
lose access to skills they normally have
become more sensitive to noise, light, touch, smells or movement
struggle with transitions or seemingly simple requests
become irritable, tearful or frustrated
seek repetitive movement, pressure, rocking, pacing or other sensory input
appear tired, exhausted or “flat”
experience a meltdown or shutdown when their available regulatory capacity is finally exceeded.
An important distinction: Their behaviour is the”signal” that their nervous system is working extremely hard.
E.g. The Teacher thinks:
“He isn't listening. He's refusing to work.”
What is happening internally:
“The sensory and cognitive demands of the environment have become so high that his nervous system is allocating most of its available resources to maintaining regulation. There is no capacity left for learning, language, flexibility or task completion.”
High metabolic demand occurs before an obvious meltdown.
The autistic person may still be sitting in the classroom and appearing relatively calm, while internally they are using enormous amounts of cognitive, sensory and autonomic effort to remain organised.
Think of the nervous system like a mobile phone battery. Under ordinary conditions:
100% battery → ordinary sensory processing → learning → communicating → participating
But if the environment becomes highly demanding:
100% battery → sensory filtering + threat detection + movement control + language processing + emotional regulation + social interpretation
The battery is being consumed much faster….. 2%.... 1%... dead.
Eventually: High demand → reduced available capacity → loss of access to skills → shutdown/meltdown/exhaustion
The person's battery may already have been depleted before anyone notices the signs.
A high-metabolic-demand state occurs when the sensory, cognitive and autonomic demands placed upon an autistic person's nervous system substantially increase the energy and processing resources required to maintain regulation and participation. As available capacity is consumed, fewer resources remain available for communication, executive functioning, learning, flexibility and social engagement.
The autistic student's actions might look like refusing, or avoiding, but the real problem is that their regulatory capacity has been consumed by the demands of the environment. Their battery is dead - 2% and fading!
Regulation is essential before participation. Further reading: Kandaswamy (2026) discusses a proposed “high-metabolic-demand state” associated with increased sensory processing in autism. Journal of Psychology & Clinical Psychiatry, 17(2), 59–60. https://doi.org/10.15406/jpcpy.2026.17.00853
